The Pacers' Miller & Lynch / Snizek & Dodge AA/Fuel Altered and The Billy Lynch AA/Fuel Dragster celebrated drag racing's return to LI with a Nitro Cacklefest at the 100 Foot Drags held at Riverhead Raceway on Sunday May 22nd 2011.
Despite the cold and gloomy day with patchy spots of rain, a great day of racing was able to take place with lots of spectators and a big field of cars almost all of which carryed the message of "We Need A Track" on their rear windows.
There was a 3 hour Test & Tune session with racers getting as much as 14 runs in. Cars entered from the rightmost entrance to the track oval and followed the track clockwise to do a burnout and stage infield at the beginning of the center "X" of the track. After staging in the lights, competitors would race headsup just -100 feet- and finish just prior to the mid point of the "X" before getting on the brakes and coasting counterclockwise around the turn of the track to pick up their timeslip and then drive through the opposite entrance back to the pits.
Although their were some serious competition race cars there along with a group of factory stockers, nothing was as impressive as the thunder created at intermission by the nitro powered cars. Cackling the cars were former top fuel drivers Billy Lynch, Roy Miller & George Snizek along with Bobby Lynch, Dennis Quitoni and Scott Snizek. Spectators got to a full sensory experience of what New York National Speedway used to be like with two of the most beautiful and accurately recreated race cars from Long Island.
If you missed it, four more Holeshot Drags will take place this year at Riverhead Raceway on June 26th, July 24th, August 28th and September 11th. All start at 12 Noon. Gates open at 10am.
